Restoration Programs Matter!
One of the juvenile program this organization supports was inspired by a news report of a police officer with a black youth. The scene showed the young Black man being escorted to a police car after being caught for a carjacking on Chicago’s South Side. In the scene the young man’s pants which were sagging, hanging on by a belt, was falling down as the youth was being escorted to a police car and the reporter’s camera was focused on him.
Then something extraordinary happened! The officer escorting the troubled youth, reacted, the officer reached down to the young man’s back pocket and pulled the young man’s pants up. The act conveyed that the officer cared about the dignity and image of a young man who could not recognize the importance of these attributes in himself! In this awful predicament the youth got himself into, he needed someone to demonstrate that a Black youth in trouble still deserves dignity, has value, potential, and worth!
